30) The BEST Scale To Know in Jazz – The Altered Scale
Willie January 25, 2022
The Altered Scale, also known as the Super Locrian scale, is a commonly used scale in jazz improvisation. It is derived from the seventh mode of the melodic minor scale, and is built by raising the seventh note of the scale and lowering the fifth, sixth and ninth notes.
The resulting scale contains all the altered notes (b9, #9, b5, #5) that can be used to create tension and dissonance in jazz improvisation, and is often used over dominant 7th chords with altered extensions.
The Altered Scale can be a bit tricky to navigate at first, but with practice and guidance from experienced jazz musicians, it can become an incredibly versatile and powerful tool for creating complex and interesting solos.
